UNIT 2 : Conatitutional Government
Checks & Balances - a system that allows each branch of a government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power
Establish Justice- US court systems make sure that the law applies to everyone (no matter what race, color, religion, etc) and that everyone abides by the laws
Insure Domestic Tranquility- US National Guard steps in during natural disasters to help out
Provide for the Common Defense -government raises navies and armies Promote the General Welfare- NIH leads against the fight of diseases; government works on health care plans to try and ensure health care throughout the nation Secure the Blessings of Liberty-amendments have been added to the Constitution Form a More Perfect Union- currency is the same in all 13 states Amendment I

The process used to amend the constitution :

. bill goes to senate and 51 votes are needed to pass this bill
. bill goes to the president he can either sign or veto it

UNIT 6: The qualifications of voting is you must be 18, You must be a resident of of your state, You must not have been convicted of a felony and In order to participate in an election, a qualified voter must be properly registered no later than thirty (30) days before the election.
Characteristics of a Republican - They support school prayer, creationism in the classroom, religious symbols being displayed on public. They are for religious freedom. But, are against atheist freedom. In their mind, you are free to worship and rightfully should be. But, you are not free to be free from it. they are also against Gay marriage and their Pro life.

6 functions of political parties - 1 REPRESENTATION
According to Anthony Downs, the political market parallels the economic market. So, politicians act essentially as entrepreneurs seeking votes. So, party behaves very much like business.
2 – ELIT FORMATION AND RECRUITMENT
Party is based on leader and party is dominated by elite structure. So, leader cannot be appointed democratic way. In this system, primary election reduces control of party. Because, leader is elected by people in primary election
3- GOAL FORMULATING
Party is preparing program of Government through the conferences, conventions and election manifestos so on. So, party is a major source of policy institution.
4 – INTEREST ARTICULATION AND AGGREGATION
Parties help to articulate and aggregate the various interests found in society. Such as business, labor, religious and ethnics so on.
5- SOCIALISATION AND MOBILISATION
Through internal debate and discussion, as well as campaigning and electoral competition, parties are important agent of political education and socialization. For example, teacher discussed about New Right.
6 – ORGANISATION OF GOVERNMENT
When party became government, it uses government policy in assembly. In parliamentary system, assembly controls government
Electoral College- constitution
The Electoral College is a process, not a place. The founding fathers established it in the constitution as a compromise between election of the President by a vote in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens.
